Despite being the largest city on Bali, Denpasar has underdeveloped transportation infrastructure. The roads are narrow and many remain unpaved, often causing journeys of just a few dozen kilometers to take several hours. To truly connect with this land, journeying through forests and around trees, under the stars and moon, day and night, marked the footsteps of Zhang Yinjun and his team during their charitable visit to Indonesia.

On April 4, 2025, the Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation, together with Ms. Zhang Yinjun and her team, continued their visit and research trip in Indonesia. They visited the "Graha Nawasena" consortium in Denpasar, the capital of Bali Province, and engaged in an in-depth discussion with its founder, Mr. Nyoman Juniarta. Mr. Dede Supriyanto, Head of the West Java Special Education Center at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of Indonesia, was also present to welcome the guests and engage in discussions on practical pathways and policy support for the social inclusion and innovation and entrepreneurship of people with disabilities.

"Graha Nawasena" was initiated and founded by Mr. Juniarta, a philanthropist and former sailor who became paraplegic and has since been confined to a wheelchair after an accident in which he fell from the 14th floor. Facing a life of severe challenges, he was not defeated by fate. Instead, he used his experiences to inspire others by voluntarily organizing people with disabilities to learn practical skills, start small businesses, and participate in social services, helping countless marginalized individuals with physical disabilities regain their dignity and sense of direction in life.
After visiting "Graha Nawasena" on
December 8, 2022, the Vietnamese Ambassador to Indonesia, Ta Van Thong,
expressed his appreciation and best wishes for the institution's support of the
disabled community.
Certificate of Participation awarded to
"Graha Nawasena" by the Fakultas Ekonomi, Bisnis dan Pariwisata at Universitas
Hindu Indonesia, in recognition of its contributions to social
responsibility.
What is even more exciting is that this originally grassroots, self-help group of disadvantaged individuals has now received official support from the Ministry of Education of Indonesia, becoming the only nationwide social consortium independently established by people with disabilities and integrated into the educational support system. The organization has currently helped over 500 individuals with disabilities gain employment or become self-employed. These independent individuals not only uphold their own dignity and self-respect but also support over 500 loving families.
Here, Zhang Yinjun, the President, met two
marginalized young individuals with hearing and speech impairments: one in their
early twenties and the other under twenty. After gaining a deeper understanding,
it was found that when they were children, the two young individuals could have
potentially treated their hearing impairments with cochlear implants or surgery.
Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, they missed the optimal time for
treatment, leading to lifelong disabilities. Later, with the guidance and
support of "Graha Nawasena", the two young people secured positions as waitstaff
at a local five-star hotel, achieving financial independence. Even though there
is now money for treatment, neither cochlear implants nor hearing aids can
function effectively anymore. Zhang Yinjun, the President, made an appeal,
hoping that more and more compassion will gather here to bring the wonderful
melodies of nature into the silent world of this group.
Everyone present couldn't help but admire that, despite its grassroots beginnings and limited strength, this endeavor has forged a path from individuals to systems. By harnessing the subtle power of civil forces, it has influenced the allocation of national public resources and the optimization of systems, thereby demonstrating remarkable exemplary value.
Ms. Zhang Yinjun also encouraged Mr. Juniarta
to consider establishing more self-help organizations led by persons with
disabilities across Indonesia's more than 17,000 islands in the future,
promoting a "decentralized" model of disability inclusion and social
participation to genuinely achieve inclusive and sustainable development.
The story of Denpasar's "Graha Nawasena" is a
profound and transformative journey, a beacon illuminating the destinies of more
people with disabilities. This visit has also illuminated the next chapter of
the Beijing Changier Education Foundation's global development vision.
